Achievements & Fears-WoW

I know such an ominous title for my first post in…ages. But let’s get to it!
WOOHOO! Zhavi, my spacegoat priest, has made 80! Having obtained this final level of priestliness, promptly respec to holy. That’s right I abandoned the darkside for the syrupy sweet holy. There is even an rp story brewing in my head. Don’t hold your breath to see it posted however.
I should give you the set up before launching into the rest of this huh? Screw it! We can always come back right?
Upon my ding! level and respec Woleca aka Ace, venerable Guild Leader of Eastwind (my home) and Raid leader of two different Leftovers charters (Westwind and One Inch Punch) decided it was a good idea to drag my woefully unprepared and under geared self into my first holy raid, Naxx 10. Nothing like a trial by fire to rev me up about my new spec. Woleca for taking a huge change on this reformed DPS.
Now we can back track. I raid with the moderately famous Leftovers Raiding (featured in WoW Insider) An awesome raiding organization which allowed my hunter in BC to go all the way up to Sunwell (way to go Westwind!). Now with the Lich King I’ll be turning once more to LO to nurture my raid loving self.
Zhavi has even found a deserving charter in need of an extra healer. Here is where the fear comes in. See my guild and old charter both run Naxx10, I’m not raiding with them though. Don’t get me wrong they are the most rocking and excellent players I know. Its just…nerves. See above where I said Woleca was awesome and took me on a raid Day 1 of level 80 and respec? I was a basket case of nerves! Westwind is a progression charter, I don’t want to hamper them with a wet behind the ears healer. Eastwind is my guildies, these people are my family in the game. Call me neurotic, I likely am, but that makes them the last people I want to fall and go squish in front of. Light knows they had to put up with my hunter enough while I was learning how to raid her, I’m not sure they could survive me learning a healer on them.
But friends? Friends know you are going to wear that awful dress and tell you it looks great while encouragingly suggesting you wear the black trench coat to cover it up because it might rain and bleed that fuchsia all over you. I’m talking real life friends who have to love you because they said they would and meant it. Mind you, my RL friends are all guys and I don’t think they would save me the embarrassment of a horrid dress. (well my husband might but only to save himself the embarrassment of being seen with me)
So Zhavi has gone with two friends who help lead another charter, Heroes and Thugs. One of them is a fellow priest and heal lead. Which calms me down, a bit, I’m still new to this and under geared! But he is the calming chill type. No pressure, no worry I am holding back progression, just chill people killing things. I miss progression but I think maybe…it can wait until I learn to heal, get some gear, and learn…how to chill.
Think I was subtle enough with all the shout outs in there? Nah me either but they are all deserved!

Lost Vale

WAR is relatively new on the MMO scene and so the time for “WOOT we did something first” is  upon us. Today I would like to give lots of love and props to…Shychef, Guild Leader of End of Days. (Forgive me for procrastinating on your post). Shy (as we affectionately call him) along with a team of 5 others, entered the Lost Vale and successful slaughtered all resistance within, crowned with the death of N’Kari the final boss. *cheers* WAY TO GO SHY!!! Killing the Final Boss in the toughest dungeon/instance currently in the game. Also I believe it is a Destruction side first down for Gorefang.

Do expect to see a future post about shy and the guild coming soon. And if I can tag him down…an interview with our elusive guild leader 🙂 Again ROCK OUT SHY!!!!! ❤

Role-playing and Gender

Role-playing and Gender

I’ve stated in the first post that I play WAR and WoW. Its now time to ‘fess up and admit I play RPGs in general. That’s right…I’m a geek. *rips off her coat to show her GEEK AND PROUD shirt* I will confess I table-top rp (multiple systems), video games (other than WoW and WAR), and I…play miniatures war games (thus why I gave WAR a chance in the first place). Now that we have gotten that little niggling confession out of the way, we should move onto the other. I’m a chick. This won’t be a large focus of the blog unless someone makes it…see the end of this post.

While female gamers are less rare than we once were; I am from the old school of being ogled when I walk into a game convention because I’m one of 4 girls and usually the other 3 are just gamer girlfriends. You know who they are, the girls who ‘role-play’ until they’ve been dating the guy awhile and suddenly it’s ‘his childish’ hobby. They will hang around every now and they but they don’t really game. (My local Games Workshop store may start thinking this of my if I don’t bring my Witch Hunters army to play one day…its became like Duke Nukem. Myth and Legend but nothing more)

I recently got into contact with two long time buddies I’ve been doing online gaming with for years. They reminded me of an online community we were a part of that was rocked when two different players had led people on to believe they were girls IRL as well as in the game. There was a lot of shock and anger. This community was a close knit group and was shocked by it. Did it really matter that it was a guy playing it? Ultimately, no. But it was a lie propagated by a truth, at least at that particular time, which was girl gamers were given more privileges than the guys. So, these two people lied about who they were IRL to get in game favors from other players and the admin of the little community.

People laugh these days when I tell them that story. I can’t tell you how many friends tell me they assume I’m a guy until we get on vent and they realize I’m a girl. The perception and attitudes of gender are changing in the online gaming community. I, for one, am very pleased with these changes. With the influx of females gaming, there comes a balance and a sense of equality. Just because I’m a female gamer doesn’t mean I can’t farm my own mats and need your help. There was sense back in the days of EQ that we weren’t as good at killing and so we needed help with the game.

Why is any of this important? Perception is reality. Because I know I’m a girl gamer and have historically been in the minority of my gaming community I’ve adopted a simple rule for interacting with the virtual world of gaming and avatars.

Toon gender = your gender

So when you are on a girl character you are a girl etc. Why? Because unless you are on Vent its just easier for me. I know there could be a guy behind the screen. A few of my RL friends will only play girl characters. For perhaps the best reason ever, the models look better and if they are going to be stuck staring at this character for potentially years its not going to be an ugly elf with a stupid scowl all the time

Why this post in the first place if perceptions are changing? Because someone had the audacity to argue with me if IRL I was a girl or not. HA! I am and I blog. Fear me *cues the spooky sounds* 😉
